Google Ads vs SEO: which is better for local businesses?

June 5, 2026 · BizVista

Google Ads gives you leads immediately but you pay for every click. SEO takes months to build but generates free organic traffic indefinitely. Most local businesses need both: ads for immediate leads and SEO for long-term compounding growth.

This isn’t an either/or decision. It’s a sequencing decision. The right question isn’t “which one should I do.” It’s “which one should I start with and when do I add the other.”

How Google Ads works for local businesses

Google Ads puts your business at the top of search results immediately. You pick keywords, write ads, set a budget, and within hours you can have leads coming in. When someone searches “plumber near me” and clicks your ad, you pay for that click. If they call and book a job, you’ve got a customer.

The advantage is speed. You can turn on a Google Ads campaign today and have leads by tomorrow. The disadvantage is that the moment you stop paying, the leads stop coming. Google Ads is a faucet. It works while it’s on.

The average cost per click in 2026 is $5.42, and the average cost per lead is $66.69 across all industries. Your actual costs depend on your industry (legal is the most expensive, auto repair is one of the cheapest) and your market (bigger cities cost more).

How SEO works for local businesses

SEO gets your business into Google’s organic results and the local map pack without paying for each click. When someone searches “dentist in Plano” and your practice shows up in the top three map results, that click is free. The next click is free. Every click is free.

The advantage is compounding returns. A page that ranks well can generate leads for years without additional cost. The disadvantage is time. SEO typically takes 3-6 months to show meaningful results, and 12+ months to fully mature. It’s a long game.

SEO also requires ongoing work. Google’s algorithm changes, competitors adjust their strategies, and your content needs to stay fresh. It’s not a one-time investment. But the cost of maintaining SEO rankings is far less than the cost of continuously paying for the same clicks through ads.

The real comparison

Cost structure: Google Ads is pay-per-click, so your costs scale with volume. SEO is a fixed monthly investment regardless of how many clicks you get. At low volumes, ads are cheaper. At high volumes, SEO is dramatically cheaper per lead.

Time to results: Google Ads produces leads within days. SEO produces leads within months. If you need customers this week, ads are the only option.

Trust factor: 70-80% of users skip the ads and click on organic results. There’s an inherent trust advantage to ranking organically. But for high-intent local searches (“emergency plumber”), people click the first thing they see, ad or not.

Sustainability: When you stop paying for ads, leads stop. When you stop actively doing SEO, rankings decline slowly but the traffic doesn’t disappear overnight. SEO builds an asset. Ads rent attention.

When to use each

Start with Google Ads if you need leads now. If your calendar is empty and you need customers this month, ads are the fastest path. They also give you valuable data about which keywords convert, which you can use to inform your SEO strategy later.

Start with SEO if you have a longer timeline and want to build an asset. If you can afford to wait 3-6 months for results, SEO will eventually produce leads at a much lower cost per acquisition than ads.

The ideal approach for most local businesses: run Google Ads from day one for immediate leads while investing in SEO simultaneously. Within 6-12 months, your organic rankings start producing free leads. At that point, you can reduce your ad spend on the keywords where you’re already ranking organically and shift that budget to new keywords or new markets. The ads feed the business today. The SEO builds the machine for tomorrow.

The bottom line

Google Ads and SEO are not competitors. They’re complements. Ads are your short game. SEO is your long game. Running both gives you leads today while building an asset that reduces your cost per customer over time.
